LENS MATERIALS

GLASS

In the past this material was the only option for patients needing corrective lenses.  If these lenses are not heat-treated they are not resistant to breakage.  Accordingly the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has mandated that these lenses be either heat or chemically treated to make them more resistant to breakage.  Even so they are not as shatter proof as Plastic or Polycarbonate materials and are considered to be outmoded technology by most professionals.  Many of the old style tints and segments are no longer available or can only be ordered at a prohibitive cost to the patient. In addition glass is the heaviest lens available.  The best alternative for the patient is to select a different lens material.

PLASTIC (CR-39)
Plastic lenses are approximately one-half the weight of a glass lens.  Other advantages over the glass lens are that this material can be treated for Ultraviolet (UV) protection and can be treated with scratch resistant coatings.  They also accept Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings and practically any other lens treatment obtainable.  While this type of lens material is vastly superior to glass, it is still considered an outmoded technology and is not preferable to Polycarbonate material.

POLYCARBONATE
Polycarbonate is the most impact resistant of all materials available today.  This material is the superior option, not only for regular lenses, but also for safety eyewear, sportswear, and children’s eyewear.

This material is also the lightest and thinnest lens available. It allows for, not only for clarity of vision, but greater patient comfort.  In addition advanced scratch coatings can make this lens material the most scratch resistant material.  Polycarbonate is the lens material of choice by most professionals.
